Common problems faced by CPAP mask users and their solutions

CPAP therapy is one of the most effective treatments for the patients of sleep apnea. A CPAP mask is the equipment used to be worn over the nose or mouth or both which helps in keeping the airway open and lets the patient breathe in a better way. It is usually triangular in shape but to meet the patient’s individual requirements and way of breathing, different types of such masks are being manufactured. These masks are made of soft plastic or silicon so that these can be worn comfortably.

CPAP masks made of gel are also available for those who are allergic to plastic. Custom masks can be obtained by pre- heating and molding it according to the patient’s face contours. These can be nose masks, face masks or nose- face masks. For instance, if the patient breathes from his nose, a nose mask will suit him better however if he generally breathes from nose but sometimes he also uses his mouth due to blockage in the nose, the nose- face mask is preferred for him. Many patients suffering from sleep apnea are able to sleep comfortably by using these masks but some of them have also come across a few side effects.

Physical unease
Many CPAP mask users state that they have experienced discomfort while using this device. The most common reason behind it is improper fit of the mask. Generally these masks are molded according to the shape of the patient’s face but to keep it intact during sleeping, some patients adjust it to be very tight. Though a level of fit is desirable to avoid air leakage but making it tighter than that will cause discomfort. You can also consult a physician to let you know the right way of using it.

Blockage in the nose
Some CPAP mask users also complain of nasal congestion. During normal breathing, the air inhaled is moistened by the nose. When the CPAP mask pumps air through nose, it causes the inner part of the nose to dry and develop mucus. This mucus is responsible for the irritation and blockage caused while breathing. To avoid this problem, the physicians suggest using a cold water humidifier or a hot water humidifier that will heat up the air so that adequate moisture can be carried along with the inhaled air.

Problems due to allergies
Some people suffer from different kinds of allergies which result in swelling or inflammation inside the nose or throat. Such inflammation reduces the space which is available for air passage through the nose or throat. In such a case, you can try the different types of CPAP masks available so that a better suited mask can be selected. It is recommended that before staring using such a mask, you should consult a physician as using it straight away may exaggerate the issue. It is very important to choose the right type of mask and know the right way to use it to obtain its benefits.
